About Us

The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness and response services to fire in the built and landscape environments, as well as scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The QFD provides a multi-hazard emergency response, including road crash rescue, bushfire, hazardous material, technical and vertical rescue, severe weather incidents, remote and Swiftwater rescue, and provides a number of functions supporting community safety outcomes.

The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), as well as the broader department which work together to pre-empt, prevent, mitigate and manage the consequences of fires and other emergencies on Queensland communities and support our large volunteer membership across the state.

The QFD is an organisation that is focused on reframing the department’s relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and organisations through the Path to Treaty, Closing the Gap and building our cultural.

Purpose of the role

The Office of the Chief Fire Officer is responsible for providing high-level advice and insight to the Commissioner about the fire services and operational practice, including matters relating to service delivery, operational culture, interoperability planning and evaluation of strategies that provide continuous improvement, and identification and implementation of innovative approaches that lift service delivery and safety outcomes, and ensure best practice processes meet current and future needs of the department.

Reporting to the Chief Fire Officer you will ensure consistent governance, oversight, management and delivery of various programs and strategic initiatives, including the provision of professional advice, assurance, guidance and development of briefing materials that are adequately provided in line with service delivery and organisational objectives. You will contribute to strengthening the department’s assurance; best practice; interoperability; research; innovation; capability; and diversity culture by overseeing or managing projects to advance the key priorities of the Office of the Chief Fire Officer work program and meet operational capability requirements.

Your key accountabilities

Responsibilities

Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:

Support the Chief Fire Officer by providing high-level and comprehensive advice, and input into processes for service delivery, including standards and guidelines to enable effective decision-making in relation to existing or emerging strategic issues and initiatives.
Lead ongoing governance maturity and champion opportunities for strategic and operational service delivery improvements, including maintaining project management artefacts to ensure the effectiveness in the way the programs are delivered.
Research, analyse and provide advice on opportunities to improve and further develop the department’s operational capability, ensuring that adverse indicators and variances are appropriately investigated, and corrective action identified and taken where necessary.
Collaborate, support and develop project plans with consideration of strategic priorities, project milestones and interdependencies to ensure project deliverables meet desired timeframes and budget allocations.
Ensure best practice project management discipline is applied, including risk management, and/or evaluate options to resolve issues and mitigate risks to support the implementation of quality initiatives and outcomes.
Develop and maintain strong working relationships, partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to provide strategic input and advice to facilitate the planning, delivery and evaluation of projects and programs.
Represent the department and/or the Chief Fire Officer on internal, intra and/or interstate forums, meetings and committees to provide advice and promote opportunities for achieving quality service outcomes.
Prepare and review complex briefs, submissions, and other correspondence relating to project activities, issues, status updates and reporting in accordance with department requirements and governance.
