Public Health Senior Officer Built and Natural Environment
Permanent
Grade 5 £40,221- £48,474 (Consultation grade - subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review)

About Us
We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and skilled person to join our multi-disciplinary public health team in a Built and Natural Environment (BNE) senior officer role that will span the public health BNE work programs.
This is a rare opportunity to join an expanding Public Health team in the largest Local Authority in the country and contribute to Birmingham being a great city that enables people to live healthy and active lives. This role is unique and will support the joint work of the Council’s Public Health BNE team to maximise the health and wellbeing gains from regenerating the city.
The Public Health Division is engaged in a dynamic and diverse range of innovative work at a local, regional, national and international level.
The Role
The role is ideal for experienced public health or planning and regeneration professionals, that have experience in roles or programs associated with the built and natural environment, or a wider property, development or place-based regeneration background.
This full-time role will be in the expanding Built and Natural Environment team, working closely with a range of council departments including the Planning and Regeneration team, housing, licensing and transport. This role will look at embedding public health gains in the delivery of the Local Plan and all other strategies that impact healthy place making. There will also be opportunities to develop new projects that meet the priorities of the public health and planning and regeneration functions.
The successful candidates will be required to deliver on a selection of duties and responsibilities within the team, and these may change and evolve as priorities emerge and business needs change.
This role involves driving forward a Social Determinants of Health approach by supporting work across public health, focusing on improving or facilitating health through the built and natural environments.
Skills & Experience
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who:
• has substantial experience of working with a wide range of partners and stakeholders in supporting Public Health outcomes, for example elected members, the commissioners and providers of health and care services, statutory agencies and businesses
• is able to interact with the diverse communities of Birmingham and is passionate about reducing health inequalities
• has experience of delivering performance and governance arrangements and developing and implementing improvement programmes in line with agreed priorities
• has demonstrable knowledge and understanding of Public Health priorities and relevant policy environment
• has demonstrable knowledge of national planning legislation and local planning policy
• has substantial experience of developing and coordinating the delivery of major projects in complex and challenging environments
• has experience in developing staff through both formal and informal opportunities
