Primary objective
As part of the Livestock Industries team, the Rangeland Research Program Manager will manage and coordinate the
Rangeland Research Development and Extension Program across the NT whilst actively contributing to research or
extension activities to promote the sustainable development of the NT pastoral industry.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Manage and coordinate the Rangeland RD&E Program to meet government objectives and industry needs.
2. Represent the department on relevant national, interstate and Territory committees when required.
3. Negotiate and collaborate with interstate agencies and funding bodies to maximise research quality, timeliness, and
relevance.
4. Identify funding opportunities and assist other staff with preparation of funding applications.
5. Advise and mentor staff involved in rangelands research, particularly on project design, methodology, data analysis,
reporting and budget management.
6. Provide strategic advice and expert information on rangeland issues to government and industry.
7. Ensure that NT-wide reporting of rangeland issues and reporting of research is carried out in a professional and timely
manner.
8. Design, manage and deliver rangeland research projects.
+. Present research findings at industry and government forums and write research publications suitable for a range of
stakeholders.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A degree in Agriculture, Natural Resources Management or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution.
2. Considerable experience in designing and conducting rangeland research with an emphasis on the sustainable grazing
of extensive Northern Australian native pastures.
3. Substantial experience in computer–based data management and analysis.
4. Experience in writing scientific papers, research reports, and high-level reports to government.
5. Demonstrated understanding of and significant experience in rangeland research techniques, including appropriate
experimental design, rangeland monitoring and pasture growth models.
6. Experience in identifying issues requiring research, and in initiating, developing, and managing research projects
including funding submissions and budgets.
7. Demonstrated ability to manage, coordinate and mentor other staff to achieve project outcomes and meet deadlines.
8. A valid driving licence and ability to travel to remote locations for extended periods.
Desirable
1. Relevant postgraduate qualifications.
2. Experience in the use and application of GRASP pasture models.
