JOB SUMMARY:
The Renewable Energy Generation Engineer - Mechanical is part of a team responsible for the maintenance, modernization and operation of our generation operations and plans, organizes and leads activities to optimize and modernize the operation of Portage Power’s generating facilities.
The Renewable Energy Generation Engineer - Mechanical is responsible for managing multidisciplinary engineering projects and providing support to the operations of the generation assets in Canada and the United States. The Renewable Energy Generation Engineer - Mechanical plans and coordinates major capital and modernization projects with an emphasis on mechanical but also including electrical, civil, instrumentation and control engineering disciplines, and works closely with external consulting resources to bring projects from concept through to successful completion.
The Renewable Energy Generation Engineer provides support and assistance to the day to day operations through the tracking and reporting of generating asset performance. They work closely with and provide advice to operating staff with regards to developing engineering solutions to optimize operations and the development of preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance programs, policies and procedures;
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Capital Project Development and Execution
Plan, design and execute mechanical system projects in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of internal and external stakeholders and serve as Project Manager for project delivery and commissioning
Execute minor capital projects in a construction manager role
Manage and/or participate in projects, RFPs, specifications and drawings, proposal review and contract award, tendering phase, debriefing, quality assurance and finalization
Prepare, review, negotiate and finalize contract documents, and supervise contract administration to ensure compliance with permits, policies and codes
Participate in due diligence inspections and review as they relate to growth opportunities
Evaluate project options and provide economic assessments of generation projects
Assist in capital budget preparation, and prioritize, plan and schedule work including preparation of budget briefs for projects and participate in overall budget and business planning processes
Operation and Maintenance
Troubleshoot routine and non-routine problems (faults, failures), provide in-depth analyses, and causing deficiencies to be corrected or repaired, and make recommendations for design changes
Provide technical support to operations and maintenance staff, including interpretation of inspection results, special reports, etc.
Where necessary, operate AutoCAD and relevant mechanical design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks
Assist in developing operation and maintenance plans for mechanical equipment
Assist in maintenance budget preparation
Participate in Operations On-Call program
Conduct special projects and other duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics or other similar Engineering field
Professional Engineer licensed or able to be licensed in the province of Ontario or Quebec
Minimum 5 years experience in mechanical engineering and detailed design of renewable power generation projects (hydro, wind and solar)
Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience of mechanical testing and commissioning of power systems
Understanding of finite element analysis
Understanding of hydraulic systems with emphasis on water filtration skids and hydraulic power units
Understanding of fundamental turbo-machinery with emphasis on bearing failures and rotational shaft design
Experience in business development, proposal, technical specification and work plan preparation
Experience managing construction projects, coordinating with contractors and consultants, and ensuring projects are delivered on time and on budget
Knowledge of Industrial communication networks
Strong computer skills; proficient in the use of office productivity and collaboration tools, preferably G Suite
English essential, both oral and written; Bilingual (English/French) considered an asset
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Valid Driver’s license – Class G
Ability to obtain work visa for United States
This is a management group opportunity and salary will be commensurate with qualifications.
