Job description
About us

Orso Publishing is on a mission to change how STEM educational products are made. We create the highest quality print and digital resources in STEM subjects, for a range of fantastic clients in the UK and abroad – including publishers, EdTech companies, and other educational institutions.

What sets us apart is that we do much of our work in-house, using our own team of amazing editors and content specialists. Because of this, we place a lot of focus on finding the right people with the right subject expertise, and then giving them the training and development they need to deliver projects at the quality our clients have come to expect.

Please note that we are open to hearing from candidates with any level of experience, including recent graduates, those looking to transition to a new industry, or those already established in educational publishing. We are also keen to ensure that everyone is in the right role to match their skills, and so we may offer different job titles to those listed in this advert.

Please also note, however, that we are unable to accept applications from overseas candidates or those who do not already have the legal right to work in the UK. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship.

The candidate

We’re now on the lookout for talented and driven people to join us as content-specialist editors, to help us keep growing our team and to keep delivering more of the highest quality educational resources.

Because of the way we work, our only requirement is that candidates have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Maths, a Natural Science, or a related field (e.g. Computer Science or Engineering), and that this is backed up by excellent school results – including at least two A Levels (or equivalent) in STEM subjects. Because of the way we work, it's vital that you be confident working with (and writing, editing, or rewriting as necessary) educational content at the highest level in one or more STEM subjects.

Beyond this, the role would particularly suit somebody who:
• Has excellent written communication skills, with a strong grasp of grammar and the ability to present ideas and concepts in a clear, concise, and easy-to-understand manner.
• Has a passion for education and helping students get the most out of their learning - perhaps backed by experience teaching, tutoring, or similar.
• Is interested in, and has experience in, creating content – either professionally or through personal projects (such as a podcast, a YouTube channel, or a self-taught artistic side-hustle).
• Is a natural problem-solver, always looking for ways to maximise efficiency, improve how something is done, and find solutions before the problem even arises.
• Is motivated, organised, adaptable, willing to learn, and keen to get involved with a variety of tasks.
• Has professional experience in which they have been able to display any or all of the above!

In return, you would get the chance to:
• Create print and digital educational resources for some of the largest educational publishers in the UK and abroad, managing your own projects and learning new skills as you go.
• Help learners get the most out of the resources they use, allowing them to develop the same passion for STEM that you have.
• Be part of a growing company, playing an active role in shaping our future, and taking us to the next level.
• Work from our spacious central Cheltenham office, with a flexible 35-hour work week, 25 days holiday (plus bank holidays), and the potential for hybrid home working where practical.
• Earn an industry-competitive salary (starting at £26,000, or more depending on experience).

The role

Your day-to-day would involve a wide variety of tasks, including but not limited to the following (and for all of which you'd receive training where required):
• Writing, editing and proofreading educational content
• Creating technical artworks and illustrations to be used in print and digital products
• Building, producing and editing animated educational videos
• Writing voiceover scripts and producing audio files
• Designing and building online lessons and learning materials
• Setting up and managing your own projects, including schedules, trackers, and other project documentation
• Researching, developing, consulting on, and quoting for future projects
• Working on a personal self-development project of your choosing
• Collaborating with team members both in- and out-of-house on all of the above

Applying

If you think Orso Publishing would be a good fit for you, please apply with your CV and a brief description or covering letter explaining why you'd like to work with us. (The platform may only allow you to submit one file, so please include both in a single document.) You may also email jobs@orsopublishing.co.uk with the CV and covering letter, or to ask any questions you might have.

We’re more interested in finding the right people than the right professional experience, and we understand that people from minority or underrepresented backgrounds are less likely to apply for roles in which they don’t necessarily meet all the criteria. Degree-level knowledge of a STEM subject is vital due to the nature of the work we do, but please don’t be discouraged from applying if you don’t necessarily meet all the other requirements beyond this one – we welcome all applicants, and we will endeavour to treat all applications fairly.
