The Australian National Maritime Museum is seeking a highly experienced and innovative Senior Learning Officer with strong communication and organisation skills to join our Learning team in this full-time, non-ongoing APS Level 6 position for 12 months.

The Senior Learning Officer manages the Museum’s onsite and outreach school learning program. The role is responsible for creating, managing, and evaluating programs that deliver transformative museum learning experiences for students and community groups.

The role leads the development of school workshops, tours, learning resources, teacher professional development and special onsite and offsite events. These programs utilise the Museum galleries, exhibitions, vessels and Learning Centre to highlight the Museum’s collections and stories to students, teachers and other learners. The role will focus on programs for primary and secondary students, as well as accessibility programs that make the Museum more available to community groups.

Please note: This recruitment process is intended to fill both current and future vacancies. While the position on offer is non-ongoing, a merit pool of suitable applicants may be established to fill similar ongoing and non-ongoing positions within the next 18 months.

Key Accountabilities
Under limited direction, this position is responsible for delivering the following functions:

Researching, developing, and implementing programs that maximise the educational use of the Museum’s exhibitions, galleries, vessels, precinct, and objects.
Managing the coordination of the Museum Educator team of casual staff and the quality control of the program delivery.
Collaborate with the Digital Learning Project Officer to contribute to the quality of digital learning resources.
Leading the development of programs that increase the accessibility of museum content for students and community groups.
Working with the marketing team to promote the Museum’s learning programs.
Participating in museum project teams to ensure educational thought and content are embedded into exhibitions, galleries, and projects.
Managing the Learning Coordinator and working with the Bookings Officer to ensure a high-quality end-to-end visitor experience for schools and community groups.
Developing and maintaining processes that ensure the effective ongoing delivery of programs to schools and community groups.
Identify and report on risks and challenges and implement and monitor risk mitigation strategies ensuring all onsite and outreach learning events and programs comply with policies and procedures.
Selection Criteria
Ability to design, produce and manage curriculum-linked educational programs of high quality, appeal and relevance to teacher and student audiences.
Ability to collaborate effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders on learning projects.
Demonstrated ability to manage staff and work in a team environment.
Effective written and spoken communication strategies for a range of contexts.
Ability to balance competing priorities and manage time effectively.

Qualifications and/or relevant experience required
Mandatory:
A degree in primary and/or secondary education, or equivalent educational experience in a cultural institute.
Relevant practical experience in school and/or cultural institute education, with specialisation in history, geography and/or science.
Desirable:
Experience in evaluating and improving programs to respond to audience feedback.
Experience organising events.
Success in engaging with education professional bodies.
Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and cultural content.
Demonstrated experience in WHS monitoring and risk assessment procedures.
