About Us

The Law Council of Australia is a leading advocate for the rule of law and human rights in Australia. We work closely with governments, non-government organisations, and other stakeholders to promote good governance, access to justice, and the protection of human rights.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Policy Lawyer to join our Policy Division. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of public policy development and to contribute to the advancement of human rights in Australia.

Job Responsibilities
The Principal Policy Lawyer will be responsible for leading our Human Rights team and developing comprehensive policy positions on a wide range of issues, including human rights, anti-discrimination law, migration law, and climate change.

The successful candidate will have excellent legal research and analytical skills, as well as the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and persuasively. They will also have experience working in government or a similar environment and be familiar with the Australian political system.

Key responsibilities include:

Leading the Human Rights team and developing comprehensive policy positions
Analysing and interpreting legislation and policy developments
Developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies and non-government organisations
Representing the Law Council at meetings and conferences
Preparing submissions and reports for the Law Council Board and other stakeholders
Requirements
To be considered for this role, applicants must have:

A bachelor's degree in law or a related field
Admission to legal practice in Australia
Advanced legal research and analytical skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Familiarity with the Australian political system and public policy development processes
