Do work that matters

The role of a Platform Engineer is to design, build, and run software platforms to deliver business value, and to write code that automates the running of our infrastructure and environments.

Collaboratively work with other customer facing engineers to design, build and run platforms that are used to deliver business value at greater quality, velocity, and safety. Write code that automates the operations of our platforms, infrastructure, environments, and tooling. Maintain the underlying infrastructure to ensure that it is reliable, secure and scalable. Contribute to making our platforms loved by our engineers and end-users.


Contribute to software that ensures all deployment and operations is as automated as possible, using languages such as Python, and automate implementation of controls into our platforms. Participate in cross-group activities to build a culture of one team, bar-raising both our engineering capability and our technology solutions to drive our strategy.

You will be part of the eFIR (Electronic Fixed Income and Rates) team, working on the bank’s ION electronic trading platform. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting and extending this system and directly interacting with the bond, IRS, and repo trading desks.

As a Senior Platform Engineer, you will be contributing to the on-going support and extension of the ION platform, using your technical skills and business knowledge to solve real problems to maintain our leading market trading position. You will be conceiving and driving process improvements that add significant business value. You will also be invited to join our regular engineering guilds, both local and global, to engage in knowledge sharing and learning more world-class skills, techniques, and processes.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

Are ready to be flexible with working hours to provide support for traders in a bustling and exciting trading floor environment, as well as be available for weekend releases when required

Have hands-on experience in running operations aligned to DevSecOps principles, contributing to the fundamental design, development/configuration, and deployment of the platform.

Have experience in driving test modernisation activities such as integrating test execution into CI/CD pipelines, and automation of other tasks including deployment of components to production.

Proven experience in building test automation frameworks from scratch, and ability to maintain existing test automation frameworks.

Ability to implement and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Are naturally curious, and thrive on learning new things, whether it’s business, technology, or just something new to them.

Working with a sense of urgency by understanding business impacts and with excellent incident management skills.

Interact with various upstream and downstream application teams, front office support teams, vendors, developers and traders.

Tech Skills:

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these, or a willing to learn these skillsets, (or equivalents) will set you up for success in this team:

Ideally previous experience in a technical platform support role

Ideally experience with front-office trading systems, e.g. ION MarketView or Anvil

Ideally experience with various ION/Anvil components such as MMI, System Administrator, PXE, RefData, TRPM solution, VMO, D2C market gateways, D2D market gateways

Design and implement secure CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins or TeamCity

Develop and maintain automated infrastructure with a focus on scripting and programming using languages such as Python, PowerShell, shell, Perl, Java to implement controls and tasks for building and releasing software continuously

Comfortable working in a Linux command-line environment

Efficient working in a Windows desktop environment including tools such as Oracle SQL Developer, Microsoft Word, Excel, JIRA, and Confluence

UI test automation tools such as TestComplete PRO

Developing API test automation frameworks

Optimise AWS cloud infrastructure for performance and scalability.

Setting up application monitoring tools such as ITRS Geneos

Business Skills:

We are a business-facing team and part of our value add is our in-depth knowledge of the trading business and in particular, fixed income and secured lending trading.

Interest in a trading business

Interest in corporate finance

Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with other support teams such as technology, operations, risk, compliance

Ideally knowledge of bond, IRS, repo, and other fixed income products

Ideally some knowledge of bond pricing techniques.

Ideally some knowledge of trading

Ideally knowledge of how a front-office trading desk works and the various roles

Ideally experience interacting with traders, salespeople, and other business roles
