Position Title: Shelter Veterinary Technician (Temporary)

Classification: Non-exempt

Reports To: Medical Director and Lead Veterinary Technician

Pay Range: $20 - $23 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are currently seeking a Temporary Shelter Veterinary Technician for a fixed term of five (5) months, with the potential for extension based on business needs. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of shelter animals by providing top-tier health care and supporting their journey from intake to adoption.

In this position, you will work directly with veterinarians, shelter staff, and volunteers to provide medical treatment, monitor animal health, and ensure the accuracy of the shelter’s medical records. You will play a key role in ensuring the health and well-being of the animals throughout the entire shelter process, from intake to treatment and eventual adoption.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Examine patients and assign medication according to the examination findings, under the guidance of staff veterinarian(s).
Provides routine and minor health care for animals housed at the shelter, under the guidance of the staff veterinarian(s).
Operates under the guidelines of the Shelter Medical Staff Protocol and Procedures.
Observes/examines animals in the shelter for signs of illness or injury.
Accurate and timely recording of medical findings in current software (currently PetPoint).
Ensures that each animal’s medical record is up-to-date and complete.
Routinely vaccinate and check for internal parasites of animals housed in shelter.
Ensures that daily treatments are done as prescribed, monitors the progress of the treatment, and brings up any condition in need of rechecking to the staff veterinarian.
Assists in the determination of adoptability and recommends appropriate care for animals.
Ensures and maintains appropriate inventory of all necessary supplies, drugs and equipment throughout the shelter and the Isolation area. Stock supplies and informs Lead Veterinary Technician (or responsible party) when stock is low.
Collaborate effectively and professionally with all staff members, including those in the clinic, animal care, veterinary, and customer service departments.
Assist adoption counselors to explain medical records and treatments of animals that have exceptional medical considerations.
Represent the Humane Society of Greater Miami to the highest degree by providing exceptional customer service.
Fill in at other areas and perform other tasks/functions as needed, including occasionally assisting in the clinic.
Treat all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion always, regardless of the situation or circumstance.
