GEICO is seeking an experienced Sr. Staff Engineer with a strong focus on backend development. You will play a pivotal role in building high-performance, low-maintenance, zero-downtime platforms and applications. As part of our insurance business transformation, you will help transition GEICO from a traditional IT model to a tech-driven organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while fostering a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.
Position Description
As a Sr.Staff Engineer, you will be a key member of the engineering team, working across the organization to design and deliver scalable, high-performance backend solutions and cloud-native microservices. You will drive innovation, provide solutions to the day to day challenges, leverage automation, and ensure efficient data management while mentoring junior engineers and contributing to the continuous improvement of engineering practices.
Position Responsibilities
As a Sr. Staff Engineer, you will:
Focus on multiple areas and provide leadership to engineering teams. Be the single tech engineering leader in the org working directly with Sr.Director.
Own complete solutions across their lifecycle, ensuring quality, usability, and performance.
Collaborate with product managers, team members, stakeholders, and other engineering teams to solve complex problems for enterprise-class business applications.
Architect, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems and microservices using .NET technologies.
Accountable for the quality, usability, and performance of the solutions
Build and deploy cloud-native microservices using platforms like Azure, AWS, or GCP.
Design and implement RESTful APIs and event-driven architectures for seamless communication between systems.
Utilize programming languages like Python, C# or other object-oriented languages, SQL, and NoSQL databases, Container Orchestration services including Docker and Kubernetes, and a variety of Azure tools and services
Lead in design sessions and code reviews to elevate the quality of engineering across the organization
Publish and maintain enterprise-level design documentation, workflows, and runbooks.
Provide support for critical systems, including 24x7 on-call support when necessary.
Consistently Share best practices and improve processes within and across teams.
Experience
10+ years of professional software development experience within any backend framework .NET, Java, or Python.
5+ years of experience with open-source frameworks and tools.
6+ years of experience designing and architecting scalable backend systems and microservices.
6+ years of experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
Experience in building products using microservices-oriented architecture and extensible REST APIs.
Hands-on experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes).
Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases for efficient data management.
Proficiency in application monitoring tools and performance assessments.
Qualifications
Fluency and specialization with at least two modern languages such as Java, Python or C# including object-oriented design
Fluency in DevOps concepts, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code.
Proficiency in designing and implementing RESTful APIs and event-driven architecture.
Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, operations, real-time communication)
Knowledge of cloud architecture and native services on platforms like Azure, AWS, or GCP.
Enterprise level design documentation
Risk assessment
Experience in security protocols and products: Understanding of Active Directory, Windows Authentication, SAML, OAuth
In-depth knowledge of CS data structures, algorithms, and design patterns.
Strong problem-solving ability and risk assessment skills.
Ability to excel in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or equivalent education/work experience.
Annual Salary
$130,000.00 - $260,000.00
The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
