Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Supervisor VI (Sewer Operations), this position oversees and directs specified activities of the Sewer Operations workgroup, including operation, inspection and maintenance of the storm and wastewater systems.
Duties & Responsibilities
Assists supervisor to schedule, train, direct, supervise and evaluate assigned staff engaged in the operation, inspection and maintenance of storm and wastewater systems.
Ensures that work activities are performed in accordance with all applicable standards, specifications, methods, policies and regulations. Assists with the development of standards and specifications.
Ensures that equipment and materials are ordered, received and in place prior to starting any activities. Assists with development of specifications, review and selection process for the purchase of equipment, materials and products.
Assists with the development and implementation of annual plans, operational procedures, training programs and approaches. Participates on program planning and review teams.
Assists with documentation, planning and implementation related to materials, equipment and methods.
Maintains comprehensive records, manual and electronic, of the operation and the inspection and maintenance performed.
Reviews and analyzes operation and the inspection and maintenance activities and recommends appropriate repair strategies and system improvements.
Prepares written reports concerning procedures, staff, equipment and materials used in storm and wastewater collection maintenance and inspection.
Ensures that various inspection reports, daily reports, time sheets, leave report forms, staff injury investigation reports and vehicle and equipment accident reports etc. are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and the City of Saskatoon’s administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures. Maintains and monitors programs which affect public health and safety.
Responds to, and documents, oral and written enquiries and complaints.
Performs the duties of a Supervisor VI (Sewer Operations), as required.
Performs the duties of the operator level as required and deemed competent.
Participates in on-going training, including operator certification training as directed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Experience and Training Requirements:
Secondary (high) school diploma or equivalency certificate.Three years’ experience in storm and wastewater collection system operations, inspection and maintenance.
Successful completion of, or ability to complete successfully within six months, recognized supervisory courses.
Possession of Level 2 Wastewater Collection Operator Certification from the Saskatchewan Operator Certification Board.
Obtain Level 3 Wastewater Collection Operator Certification from the Saskatchewan Operator Certification Board Must obtain within 12 months of original hire into the position.
Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
Must comply with all safety related requirements.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Knowledge of the materials, methods, techniques and equipment used in operating, inspecting and maintaining storm and wastewater collection systems.
Knowledge of the applicable policies, legislation, regulations, standards and specifications.
Knowledge of engineering terminology and techniques related to the assigned work.
Knowledge of water, sewer, electrical, gas, telephone and cable television subsurface installations.
Ability to operate all applicable technical monitoring devices used in field task monitoring and data collection.
Demonstrated ability to mentor, lead and encourage staff to develop skills and work towards organization and departmental goals.
Ability to compile technical and field data in a comprehensive manner.
Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team, the public, contractors and civic employees.
Ability to perform confined entries complete with necessary fall protection equipment and air quality monitoring equipment.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Skill in the care and use of complex office and field equipment.

Additional Requirements
Shift and weekend work may be required
Weekly Hours: 40
Salary Range: $33.1+ to $34.53 CAD per hour (2023 rates)
