“Being the best version of Sprowston that we can be”

We are seeking to appoint an inspiring and energetic Teacher of English and Drama with a commitment to supporting our students becoming confident and aspirational students of English. Prospective candidates will be motivated, hard-working and passionate about their subject.

At Sprowston Community Academy we recognise that as well as being a subject in its own right, English provides children access to the whole curriculum, underpins all learning and is essential in school and beyond. We aim for our students to develop critical awareness, the ability to craft their writing, an appreciation of literature, and the confidence to articulate their ideas in order to serve them in their academic, professional and personal lives during and beyond their time at Sprowston Community Academy.

As professionals, we are unapologetically ambitious with the challenge and support in every English lesson: every learner has the right to make progress. Students will become more empathic and tolerant through encountering a range of challenging texts that allow them to think beyond their own time and place. The novels, plays, poems and non-fiction texts that we teach will also be inclusive of both diverse cultures and voices, and the English literary heritage, representing the best of what has been written in previous centuries.

Our English curriculum is underpinned by the belief that, besides the strive for successful exam results (and the ensuing opportunities for our students), English as a subject should:
• Model and encourage a love of reading, literature and varied writing forms in the face of increasing challenges from digital media; providing access and confidence with a wide selection of literary genres
• Develop strong decoding and communication skills, aiming to reduce the impact of social disadvantage, and empower students to harness language for their own benefit and opportunity
• Cultivate an understanding, tolerance and appreciation of diverse cultures and varied individual experiences through a widening cultural capital

The Department is made up of a forward thinking, supportive and creative team who are making a difference in improving the outcomes of all our students. As a valued member of a focused Department, we are looking for someone who will demonstrate the willingness and drive to make a significant contribution to the English curriculum, and to the Academy. Enthusiasm and team working are essential as we place a high value in the role both subject-specific and pedagogical CPD have in enhancing our teacher practice and student outcomes. A timetable that covers KS3, KS4 and KS5 could be available for suitable candidates.

The type of person we are looking for can demonstrate: a high level of subject specific skills, knowledge and experience; good organisational skills and high standards; patience, a sense of humour and an ability to accept and act on constructive feedback; an ability to work on their own initiative and also to be a good team player; excellent and pro-active communication skills; an eye for detail and a willingness to improve all aspects of the service we offer; a positive attitude to all aspects of the job including enthusiasm, a professional and common sense approach and a dedication to the interests of the school.

Sprowston Community Academy is a growing 11-18 school serving the North-east of Norwich. We are exceptionally proud of our place within the local community and our strong local reputation reflects this. We are an inclusive school and believe passionately that students need to be equipped as good citizens as well as good learners. The successful applicant will work with us to fully promote this ethos whilst also striving for academic excellence.
