The City of Port Coquitlam has an exciting opportunity in the Public Works for a Trades I - Utilities. Reporting to the Foreman II, the Trades I -Utilities will be involved in the day to day operation, maintenance and repair of water distribution, wastewater and storm collection systems. They will work closely with crews and independently to perform a variety of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) tasks and programs, such as but not limited to: installing/repairing watermains, sanitary and storm mains, services, hydrant maintenance, uni-directional flushing, flush/vacuum of sanitary and storm mains, services, and manholes, installation/repair of water meters as well as the repair and maintenance of the City’s pumping and PRV stations.
Some of the key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
Perform maintenance and construction of the water distribution, waste water and storm water collection systems and their associated facilities.
Record water quality parameters within water samples including the collection of water samples.
Flush, clean and maintain the water distribution network and associated system appurtenances; including but not limited to: fire hydrants, water blow-offs, valves, manholes, chambers.
Install, troubleshoot, read water meters as required.
Maintain yards, facilities and properties associated with the City’s water, sewer and storm infrastructure.
Maintain sewer collection systems including: mains, service laterals, manholes lift stations and force mains.
Maintain storm collection systems including: catch basins, manholes, storm mains, pump station inlets and outlets.
Maintain the highest levels of safety and environmental consideration to perform all tasks.
Respond to emergent infrastructure failures, minimize damage and ensure public safety.
Perform field sampling of the water and wastewater utility systems to ensure compliance with regulatory bodies and their requirements.
Participate in the review of applicable standard operating procedures and hazard assessments.
Undertake field level inspections and hazard inspections in accordance with OH&S regulations.
Perform related work as required
The successful candidate for this position will have:
Environmental Operator Certification in Water Distribution I & Wastewater Collection I accredited through the Environmental Operator Certification Program (EOCP)
Intermediate level experience and knowledge in the operation, maintenance and construction of municipal water distribution, sanitary and storm collection systems. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the performance of departmental related operation and maintenance procedures.
Valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver’s License.
Ability to maintain good public relations during contacts with customers and members of the general public while performing the assigned duties.
Knowledge of applicable Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
A general knowledge of the operation and maintenance of water distribution, sanitary and storm collection systems, facilities.
Individuals must be capable of undertaking tasks that are labour intensive requiring a physical capability and in all weather conditions.
