Reporting to the Manager, Transit Maintenance, the Trainer, Transit Equipment is responsible for designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating training programs for all Bus Maintenance staff. This includes coordinating external training providers, supporting compliance with legislation, and coaching technical staff and apprentices.
The role also supports investigations into safety and mechanical issues and helps maintain technical resources. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone passionate about coaching, safety, and continuous improvement in a transit maintenance setting.
Note: This position requires flexibility to work different hours, shifts, and days off, based on training needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Training & Development
Lead onboarding of new MiWay Transit maintenance staff.
Design and deliver training courses, orientations, and workshops to ensure compliance and skill development.
Coach and mentor Coach Technicians, Apprentice CTs, Mechanic Helpers, GSPs, and Supervisors.
Provide guidance to apprentices preparing for their Certificate of Qualification (CofQ) exam.
Coordinate with external training providers as needed.
Track staff training records and ensure documentation meets regulatory standards.
Safety, Compliance & Inspections
Review staff incidents involving motorized equipment; conduct interviews and recommend corrective actions.
Perform site inspections and random quality control checks on preventative maintenance and repair work.
Recommend retraining based on inspection results.
Investigate mechanical failures; perform root cause analysis and suggest procedural improvements.
Research technical and safety issues; develop and implement solutions.
Technical Support & Program Oversight
Evaluate and implement technical service bulletins and procedural changes across the fleet.
Lead pilot bus modifications, test results, and prepare documentation for full rollout.
Maintain and update diagnostic laptops and software.
Support the maintenance of the department’s technical publications and preventive maintenance inspection documents.
Help manage web content and the technical resource library.
Skills and Qualifications
Completion of secondary school with additional vocational or technical training in adult education or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Minimum four (4) years of experience delivering adult training programs.
Valid 310T Truck & Coach Technician certification.
Valid B or CZ license in good standing (or ability to obtain).
Strong knowledge of:
- Highway Traffic Act and CVOR regulations
- Bus repair methods, tools, and safety practices
Comfortable working in indoor/outdoor environments with noise, dust, or fumes.
Ability to work flexible shifts, days off, and travel as needed (passport required).
Preferred Assets
310S Automotive Service Technician certification
C. Tech or C.E.T. designation
Experience developing adult training programs (needs assessments, evaluations, classroom instruction)
Strong interpersonal, coaching, and presentation skills
Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 8+,464.00 - $ 11+,286.00
