The Video Producer-Editor will work closely with other members of the video/creative team as well as the policy, political, and communications teams to conceptualize, script, produce and edit news-driven videos — with a mission to change policy in our country — ranging from breaking news, opinion pieces, policy explainers, exclusive interviews and short field documentaries.
The Video Producer-Editor will report directly to the Supervising Producer. The Video Producer-Editor must be immersed in and excited about the process of telling stories through video, with the technical and narrative skills to create powerful stories that hook viewers and keep people watching to the end.
The Video Producer-Editor role requires a high level of self-sufficiency, strong collaboration and communication skills, and a desire to help develop and grow our brand.
Core Responsibilities
Pitch ideas for long-form videos and contribute to brainstorm conversations;
Independently conceptualize, produce, and edit projects ranging from hosted studio production and text-driven narratives to field documentaries, incorporating feedback and in line with the editorial direction of MPU staff;
Script and edit videos ranging from studio productions to field documentaries with minimal oversight;
Direct and supervise the workflow of freelancers involved in assigned projects;
Participate in pre-production calls on assigned projects, taking lead on the direction of videographers;
Identify venues on assigned projects as needed;
Create shot lists for videographers on assigned projects;
Oversee the completion of beat sheets for videographers on assigned projects;
Deliver high quality product on time and within budget;
Proactively identify editorial inefficiencies and challenges, and work collaboratively with other team members to design and implement solutions;
Capture, source, edit and/or animate additional images, video, and assets as needed;
Contribute to thumbnail and title ideation on assigned projects;
Archive and organize projects to streamline productions;
Ensure all assigned projects are on schedule;
Operate in a nimble, fast paced environment
Perform other duties as assigned
Experience/Qualifications:
At least 5 years of experience in journalism or advocacy
Producing, reporting, or research experience required
Experience producing and scripting YouTube content strongly desired
Experience editing videos desired
Mastery of Adobe Premiere, experience with After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator a plus
