The Opportunity
Reporting to the Collection Development Librarian, the Coordinator of Technical Services is a member of the Collections and Technical Services Library team, as part of the Student Services department. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising the acquisitions and cataloguing technicians, and all areas of Technical Services. As the lead for the library’s systems, the Coordinator of Technical Services will be responsible for the administration of the integrated library system (Alma), the library’s course reading list system (Leganto), and any other systems the library may implement that support Scholarly Activity, Research Data Management, and other initiatives as required. Responsibilities also include participating in acquisitions, developing and implementing policies related to ordering, receiving, cataloguing and processing of Library materials, and completing other duties and assigned projects.
The Coordinator of Technical Services is a member of the library’s leadership team and works directly with the other leads and the Manager, Library, Archives, and Copyright. The successful candidate also supports the School of Transportation as their Library Liaison and works closely with other departments including ITS and Purchasing.
This position would appeal to a library technician that requires minimal supervision, has a growth mindset approach to work, and has strong interpersonal, supervisory, technical, problem solving, and analytical skills.
The Role
Systems Administration
Oversee the library’s systems including the integrated library system (Alma), the course reading list system (Leganto), and other systems as they are implemented to support other library initiatives.
Lead the systems’ technical support to ensure library systems are functioning correctly, and address technical issues as needed.
Work closely with SAIT’s ITS teams and other departments as required for system maintenance, changes, and troubleshooting as needed.
Oversee the data structures and loading for the library’s systems.
Participate in data governance projects and initiatives as needed.
Lead the technical work in system implementation projects as needed.
Provide training to library staff on new systems/ or changes to existing systems.
Keep the manager informed about the state of library systems and challenges.
Manage the library’s software purchases under the Manager’s direction.
Supervision of the Technical Services Team
Supervise staff from the Technical Services team.
Provide performance reviews and goal setting with the staff on the team.
Determine workflows and short-and-long-term planning with the team.
Develop and implement training plans for the Technical Services team including cross-training and professional development.
Oversee the daily activities and functions of the Technical Services team.
Develop and implement policies related to ordering, receiving, cataloguing and processing of Library materials.
Review and approve the policies related to the metadata and data structures of our bibliographic records.
Monitor and report on budget progress for Library materials purchases.
Provide assistance and backup for tasks assigned to the Technical Services team as required.
Provide assistance and backup for e-resources and AV as required.
Library Liaison
Actively engage with academic programs and Academic Chairs in the School of Transportation to support their curriculum maintenance and development.
Provide in-depth reference services to students, faculty, and staff in the School of Transportation.
Participate in collection development activities by working with the Collection Development Librarian to identify potential resources relevant to the School of Transportation.
Participate in library assessment activities in collaboration with the Communications and User Experience Librarian.
Participate in library reporting for program and institutional reports as needed.
Participate in the strategic direction and initiatives planning as part of the library’s leadership team.
Assist with other specialized reference as needed.
Information desk services
Provide library circulation, reference, and user assistance services to patrons at the information desk and remotely.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum
Bachelor's degree is required.
A Library Information Technology diploma, or a combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
3 years of professional library experience is required, preferably in an academic library.
Preferred
Experience working on multiple projects and managing competing priorities.
Experience working in large complex work environments and engaging with a range of users.
Experience working with complex software, such as ExLibris products Alma and Leganto, and systems integration.
Demonstrated ability for learning and supporting new systems and software, including the development and testing of customizations, workflows, automated processes, and interoperability.
Experience planning and implementing technical services and projects.
Experience with building classification schemas and applying metadata standards.
Experience working with information sources, library database licenses and the importance of access for students and staff.
A demonstrated awareness and commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Skills Required
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to initiate and maintain relationships with vendors and SAIT departments
