District Biosecurity Officer

The Upper Hunter Count Council (T/As Upper Hunter Weeds Authority) has a permanent, full-time position available, based in the Muswellbrook district of the Upper Hunter.

The County Council is a weed County Council which operates in the Singleton, Muswellbrook and Upper Hunter Local Government Areas. Council is the Local Control Authority for the Biosecurity Act 2015 for the area of operation of its constituent Councils in regard to the control and enforcement of invasive plants on both Council and private lands.

The positions require excellent communication skills with the main duties involving the inspection of private and council lands for high priority invasive plants, the preparation of records of inspection and the identification and treatment of various invasive plants. The positions also require involvement in public awareness activities such as field days.

Essential Criteria

Current Australian (Class C) Driver’s Licence.
Above average written and oral communication skills.
AQF3 or equivalent experience in the use of agricultural herbicides
Experience with Microsoft Applications or similar and capable of being trained to utilise GPS/MapInfo and other computer-based technology.
Minimum Certificate II in Conservation & Land Management (Weed Control) or extensive experience in weed identification and control of Invasive, Environmental and Turf weeds.
Be able to demonstrate an ability to carry out assigned duties without direct supervision.
Be able to demonstrate an ability to plan activities without direct supervision.
A demonstrated ability to work co-operatively with other employees.
An awareness of appropriate related legislation, i.e. Biosecurity Act 2015 and the Local Government Act 1++3.
A demonstrated knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety, Equal Employment Opportunities and Environmental Protection requirements as it relates to this position.
Demonstrate knowledge of Agricultural and other land use activities in the Upper Hunter region.
