Hikitia is a collection of mental health and addictions services in the Waikato region across our three prisons: Waikeria, Tongariro and Springhill Corrections Facility, inclusive of a purpose-built unit to provide mental health and addictions support at Waikeria called Te Wai o Pure.
Hikitia is a holistic regional service that has been designed to help address the over-representation of prisoners with mental health and addictions issues and is the first of its kind in New Zealand. It will provide a holistic multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of mental health and addictions, within the prison environment.
Where are the names from?
Hikitia - means to `lift up', carry in one's arms and take away the troubles that overwhelm a person.
Te Wai o Pure - means `cleansing waters' that restore balance. We acknowledge Ngati Maniapoto Rangatira, Shane Te Ruki for gifting these names to Ara Poutama Aotearoa.
Te Wai o Pure provides purpose-built mental health and addictions accommodation within the High Security Facility.
