Powell Barrister Professional Corporation is a boutique litigation law firm located in Markham, restricted to defending professional liability claims. We act as lead counsel for a major Ontario real estate professional liability program to defend real estate agents. Our firm has files at all levels in every court throughout the province of Ontario.

JOB OVERVIEW:
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Legal Assistant / Law Clerk to join our team. The ideal candidate will assist attorneys in various legal tasks, including drafting correspondence, court documents, and assisting in the management of case files. This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to gain practical experience in the legal field while contributing to meaningful work. There may be a grace period where you will be expected to work in office full-time until you are able to shift to your hybrid role.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for drafting Superior Court of Ontario and Small Claims Court documents;
Preparation of legal documents including affidavit of documents, notices of examination, motion records, books of authorities, settlement documents and other litigation related documents;
Assistance with litigation process: i.e. scheduling motions, examinations for discovery, mediation; Service and filing of litigation related documents;
Draft correspondence, proofreading, editing documents and correspondence, and other related administrative tasks;
Assisting lawyers with practice management: i.e. profiling incoming faxes and emails, scanning and profiling mail, arranging meetings, scheduling hearing dates with court, opening files as directed, preparing accounts as directed, and preparing closed files for storage;
Assisting lawyers with time management: i.e. diarizing, schedule maintenance, extensive use of Outlook, Amicus Attorney, and PCLaw;
Perform clerical duties such as filing, data entry, and managing correspondence.
Exhibit strong phone etiquette when communicating with clients, courts, and other parties involved in legal matters;
Proofread legal documents for clarity, grammar, and formatting errors before submission;
Provide support to other lawyers and staff as required;
Minor reception duties: welcoming clients, ordering supplies, maintaining kitchen cleanliness and organization, assist with office upkeep and other minor duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduate from a Legal Assistant / Law Clerk / Paralegal program
Strong knowledge of the Ontario Civil Practice Rules of Civil Procedure and Rules of the Small Claims Court
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Legal Accounting Software and PDF Editing Software such as Adobe or Nitro Pro, etc.
Strong computer skills
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
