Full job description
A Minister of Religion provides spiritual leadership, pastoral care, religious instruction, and administrative oversight within the church. The role involves leading worship services, preaching, teaching, administering sacraments or ordinances, guiding the spiritual development of the congregation, and representing the church in the community. The Minister oversees or participates in a wide range of ministry, pastoral, and administrative functions to support the mission of the church. The role routinely involves evenings, weekends, and on-call pastoral support depending on congregational needs and church activities.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Worship Leadership
·Lead regular worship services, including preaching, teaching, and delivering sermons.
·Prepare liturgy, prayers, and scripture readings in accordance with the church’s doctrine and traditions.
·Conduct religious ceremonies such as baptisms, weddings, funerals, communion, confirmations, and dedications.
2. Pastoral Care
·Provide spiritual guidance, counselling, prayer support, and visitation to members of the congregation.
·Offer pastoral support during life events such as illness, grief, personal crises, or family challenges.
·Maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards in pastoral interactions.
3. Teaching & Spiritual Development
·Lead Bible studies, discipleship programs, theological education, and small groups.
·Mentor ministry leaders, volunteers, and emerging leaders within the church.
·Provide faith-based instruction to children, youth, and adults.
4. Ministry Leadership & Administration
·Oversee and coordinate church ministries such as youth, worship, community outreach, missions, and pastoral programs.
·Supervise staff and volunteers as required.
·Participate in strategic planning, policy development, and implementation of the church’s vision and mission.
·Manage or contribute to administrative tasks, including reports, communication, compliance, and budgeting.
5. Community Engagement & Representation
·Represent the church in the local community, interfaith or ecumenical events, and denominational meetings.
·Support community programs such as welfare, chaplaincy, charity initiatives, and outreach activities.
·Build positive relationships with local organisations, schools, service providers, and other churches.
6. Governance & Compliance
·Ensure the church complies with relevant NSW laws and denominational requirements, including:
working With Children Check (WWCC)
safe Ministry / Child Protection policies
privacy and record-keeping obligations

Qualifications (Typical)
·Formal theological or ministry qualification (e.g., Diploma, Bachelor, or Master of Theology/Ministry)
·Ordination or recognised accreditation/credentialing within the denomination
·Over 5+ years of work experience in pastoral ministry or church leadership
