Purpose of the position:
As the Signals & Communications Technician you are accountable for the ongoing maintenance of Signals & Communications (S&C) systems in accordance with S&C standards and regulatory requirements to permit the safe operation of trains on the territory.
Position accountabilities:
Use electronic test instruments to install, maintain and diagnose equipment issues
Troubleshoot equipment down to the circuit board level
Coordinate repairs of defective circuit boards and components with vendors
Use computers for diagnostics, software tasks, and downloading logs
Test, inspect, and repair equipment according to industry standards
Produce detailed test and inspection reports
Provide field and technical support for corporate data networks and other maintenance areas
Follow Railway Operating Rules, Safety Rules, Policies, and recommended practices
Learn S&C circuit drawings and standards
Position requirements:
Technician or Technologist Diploma in Communications or Electronics from a recognized technical college, certification in radio theory or equivalent experience
Valid driver’s license required
Perform work that can be physically demanding such as long-distance driving, bending, stooping, standing and walking for long periods on uneven ground, climbing up and down and lifting and pulling heavy objects (up to 50 pounds on occasion)
Ability to respond to emergent work past normal working hours
Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions for long periods of time
Follow instructions, rules and regulations is essential
Excellent focus, attention to detail and ability to multitask
Strong communication skills (provide clear and concise instructions/directions including over radio)
Ability to travel alone and work independently
Work shifts and overtime, including days, evenings, overnight, weekends and holidays
Work away from home on an occasional basis, often in remote and isolated areas
