This position is intended to support and re-engage Sands Secondary students who are demonstrating significant patterns of school avoidance, may not be engaged in their online classes or require 1-on-1 support in a particular curricular area. This position may include co-teaching and/or providing release time for other teachers.
The Student Support Teacher uses a strength-based approach to support students experiencing a wide range of social, emotional, and physical and/or mental health-related challenges who find it challenging to attend full-time, face-to-face, in-class instruction. The Student Support Teacher has an inclusion mindset and uses a range of student-centered learning strategies, a universal design framework and a trauma sensitive approach to support student success. The Student Support Teacher provides grade-level curriculum instructional support and based on the students’ individual strengths and stretches, provides individualized opportunities for students to develop their core competencies. The Student Support Teacher works with the range of professionals involved in the students’ education to co-design and deliver the students’ educational program and social-emotional supports. This may include secondary grade-level and subject area teachers and various school and district-based inclusion support staff (e.g., counsellors, administration, education assistants, etc.).
The Student Support Teacher may act as case manager, developing and implementing
education plans such as Individual Education Plans and Positive Behaviour Support Plans. This teacher may play a key role in enabling student access to prevention and intervention related supports and services as per student social, emotional, physical, mental well-being. This teacher liaises with Learning Services personnel in support of students and families.
Qualifications
Diploma or Master’s in the area of Inclusive Education preferred OR at least three courses in inclusive education in areas including social, emotional, and mental health related learning needs.
Successful elementary or secondary level teaching experience.
Experience using a strength-based approach and a UDL framework to enable student access to curriculum learning in the classroom environment.
Experience developing and implementing Individual Education Plans, Safety Plans and Positive Behavior Support Plans.
Current CPI training is an asset.
